"Madam Currie" writes in her article, "About the only excuse I'll accept
is an allergy, and if that's the case, you should not be living in
Oregon period."

Yes, I know Oregon has a huge Christmas tree industry and it's wise to
support our local businesses. We do this as often as is possible and
reasonable. However I take exception to the concept of "Real Oregonians
don't use artificial trees." I think it's wise to use an artificial tree
if you keep it up for 3-4 weeks and keep the lights on for long periods
of time. Of course lighted artificial trees should not be watered.
Water and electricity don't mix well.

But in this season of Peace on Earth and Goodwill towards men where does
"Madam Currie" get off with telling people with allergies to "get out of
town." Her desire to protect the Oregon Christmas tree grower is
commendable. But saying that people with allergies should not be living
in Oregon seems to run counter to the spirit of the season of good will
towards ALL men. And what does it tell us about the diversity thing?
Homosexuals? OK. Blacks or Hispanics? OK. People with allergies? Ah!
Those people we want to not live here. Merry Christmas folks. Merry
Christmas and peace on earth to all of you with the exception of those
of you who have allergies. Perhaps some day "Madam Currie" will help
discover a cure for allergies. Until then I'll support my local
allergist. Maybe he'll use some of my payment to buy a real tree. :-)

So, in your house................fake or artificial? How long do you
keep it up? Yes, I mean the tree!

Hmmm...I'm not sure if I'm going to put it up...But it's fake, cause
I got sick and tired of playing "Bargaining" with the sellers who
probably make a bundle off people desperate for that "Perfect Tree"

No tree at all, of course.

Our household is Jewish now.

We do have lots of potted bamboo on the balcony just outside
the living room windows.

I guess I've so far figured there's no reason to put up a substantial tree
of either sort, considering that I'm single and typically go elsewhere for
Christmas.

I do have one of those miniature ceramic trees with the light bulb inside.

Last year we tried a fake tree for the first time, because we have had a lot
of trouble with the cats wanting to eat the pine needles. Cat vomit is bad
enough under the best of circumstances, and bloody cat vomit is something
that I recommend that avoid if possible. I have always been vehemently
anti-fake, but I have to say it was kind of nice not to have the pine
needles all over the place upon removal of the tree. We will probably use it
again this year.

I did miss the pine aroma, though.

You can also get a real pine/fir wreath - which you can put up out of reach
of the cats. Don't forget, also, artificial trees present a lower fire
hazard.

Another option is to go get a pine bough or a wreath, or go to a tree lot
and see if they have any trimmings. Just remember that they're a fire
hazard as soon (before) the needles start falling off.
